Bach at Four III

Maria Portela Larisch (Soprano)
Elvira Bill (Alt)
Benjamin Glaubitz (Tenor)
Konstantin Paganetti (Bass)
Capella Augustina
Andreas Spering (Conductor and Moderation)

Capella Augustina and Andreas Spering greet the audience in the new year with two cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach’s cantatas are prime examples of an artful connection between text and music. The basis for the lyrics are Bible texts and contemporary poetry and prose, each of which correspond to a Sunday in the church year. The Cantata BWV 123 was composed by Bach for Epiphany, which closes the traditional Christmas season on January 6th. Next to the “heavenly sweetness” in the text, there’s also talk of a “fiend from hell:” the moderation will explain just who that refers to.
