Bach um vier

Bach at Four II

Michael Schmidt-Casdorff (Flute and Moderation)
Christian Rieger (Harpsichord and Moderation)

In the second concert of the winter concert series “Bach at Four,” chamber music pearls from Johann Sebastian Bach’s pen will resound through the walls of the intimate palace church. Bach was acquainted with a succession of the most capable flutists, and at least one of his sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel, was a flute virtuoso. Thus the parts for flute are challenging not only in Bach’s cantatas and passions, but also in the famous Flute Sonata in B-Minor, where flutists can find a repertory treat representing a compendium of late Baroque composition. Michael Schmidt-Casdorff, one of the greatest flute virtuosos of our time, is very familiar with the Baroque flute and its style of play, and is charged with bringing his listeners closer to this instrument and Bach’s world of the flute. He is accompanied by one of the equally profound experts on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, the harpsichordist Christian Rieger.
