From Venice to London

Ensemble des 18. Jahrhunderts
Susanne Regel (Oboe and Conductor)

While Vivaldi seldom crossed the border out of Italy during his lifetime, the young Händel, hailing from provincial Northern Germany, was already a cosmopolitan, and in his early twenties headed for Italy. On the way he stopped in Venice and let himself be inspired by the music of the seven years older Vivaldi. Whether or not Händel also encountered Alessandro Marcello in Venice, whose Oboe Concerto in D minor counts as an archetype of the oboe concert, isn’t known. Händel wrote his Oboe Concerto in G minor possibly still as a teenager in Hamburg, while the Trio Sonatas Op. 5 were released more than 30 years later in London.
