On the Wings of Song
Sophie Harmsen (mezzo-soprano)
Wiebke Weidanz (fortepiano)
She is an internationally celebrated concert, opera and oratorio singer with a great penchant for historical performance practice: Sophie Harmsen, the child of a German family of diplomats born in Canada, works with many greats in the “original sound“ scene, among them Christophe Rousset, Andrea Marcon and René Jacobs. Under his leadership in 2017 she will sing one of her favorite roles, Dorabella in “Così fan tutte“, on a tour through Europe and Asia with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. The mezzo-soprano is a regular guest at the Salzburger Festspiele, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and the Bachfest Leipzig. Accompanied by Wiebke Weidanz – 2000 Bach prize winner, sought-after chamber music partner and continuo player, and professor at the Musikhochschule Nürnberg – Sophie Harmsen will give a recital with an extraordinary programme: late Mozart songs, English canzonettas from Haydn as well as his London-composed cantata “Arianna a Naxos“ and songs from the composer, music writer and critic Johann Friedrich Reichardt.
Songs and canzonettas by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752-1814)
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
“Arianna a Naxos” Hob. XXVIb:2
