Joel Frederiksen (bass, lute, conductorship)

In the classical romantic instrumental music tradition, a scherzo is a fast, rhythmic, refined musical piece. Monteverdi, the great master of Italian early Baroque, did not know the term “scherzo.“ He understood the word in its original sense: merriment, dalliance, and trifle. His vocal instrumental “Scherzi musicali“ are music for entertainment: light, often dance-like, stanzaic and homophonous. The same goes for various collections from his contemporary Biagio Marini, who with his “Sonata sopra la Monica“ landed one of the hits of the Baroque age. With us will be a top-class vocal trio, accompanied by the Ensemble Phoenix Munich, which in 2013 was awarded an ECHO Klassik.
